Mexico plans advance prison voting for up to 118,623 people

Mexico’s National Electoral Institute approved a plan for people in preventive detention to vote in the 2026–2027 elections.

The plan covers 21 states and sets out the roles of the electoral authorities and prison officials.

Voting will take place in person and in advance at prisons with the security and facilities needed.

Paper ballots could reach up to 118,623 people across 261 prisons identified as suitable for voting.

Elections for state governors will be held in 17 states, while six states will include votes for all local offices being elected.

Advance voting is scheduled for May 12 to 26, 2027, and ballots will be counted on election day, June 6, with results added to the relevant state systems.
