Indonesia Plans Mini Fish Farms in 40,000 Villages by 2029
Indonesia’s fisheries minister, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, says the ministry plans to build mini fish farms in 40,000 villages by 2029.
The farms will use a system called Mini RAS, which recirculates water for fish farming, and were planned after visits to Japan, China and Europe.
Each village site is targeted to produce 30 tonnes of tilapia, catfish or grouper, for a national annual target of 1.2 million tonnes.
The plan is part of President Prabowo’s effort to increase access to fish protein and improve nutrition.
The ministry also expects the program to create up to 80,000 jobs and support fish seed and feed industries.
The ministry has not given a more specific timetable for building the farms beyond its 2029 target.
