Mexican parties urge INE chief Guadalupe Taddei to step aside during inquiry

Mexico’s electoral authority, the National Electoral Institute (INE), is facing questions about contracts and possible conflicts of interest.

At a council meeting, the SOMOS party asked Guadalupe Taddei to step aside temporarily while the allegations are investigated.

The questions include reports of a connection between Taddei and Alfredo Hernández Casillas, described as an INE supplier, and a party raised concerns about a party he organized for her.

These are allegations that have not been established, and party representatives called for transparency and answers about public spending.

The PRI said Taddei should resign if she cannot show the contracts were lawful and free of conflicts of interest.

Taddei rejected calls to leave her post and said she would respond to requests from the relevant authorities; the allegations are to be examined through the appropriate procedures.

The response the people of Mexico are asking for is what were you doing at a celebration with Alfredo Hernández, who is a supplier to this institute; that would help resolve many of the doubts about transparency in this institute today.
