Jakarta Neighborhood Recycling Bank Grows to About 50 Active Members

Talitha Fauzia Chairunissa leads a neighborhood recycling effort in Pondok Pinang, South Jakarta.

She helped set up Bank Sampah Hijau 17 in November 2025, ahead of a Jakarta instruction requiring waste sorting and processing at its source.

The bank now has about 50 active members, up from roughly 5–10 at the start, including people from nearby areas.

Residents are encouraged to separate organic waste, non-organic waste, residual waste, electronic waste and hazardous materials.

Education and empathy help residents learn how to sort waste, including people who are unsure where to begin or cannot take part in every activity.

Proceeds help supplement the income of local security guards and waste collectors, and Talitha hopes education will also improve waste collectors’ well-being.

Fifteen candidates are being assessed, with ten to reach the final stage, and the winners are scheduled to be announced on November 10, 2026.
