GMO to compensate users for losses from unauthorized FX trades

GMO said it will compensate users whose FX accounts suffered unauthorized trades after an attack on its Onamae.com Desktop Cloud service in Japan.

The service provides virtual servers that customers use to run automated foreign-exchange trading around the clock.

Attackers accessed stored login information, and some users reported trades they did not recognize.

GMO will cover losses from those trades and related fees, but not indirect losses or profits users might otherwise have made.

All users will also receive ¥5,000, whether or not they suffered losses.

GMO says it is investigating the total damage and will explain how to apply for compensation by November 6.

The company says it will reject the attackers’ demands and has asked police to investigate.
