Gyeongju and Yeongdeok to develop East Coast walking routes
Gyeongju and Yeongdeok will develop coastal walking routes in South Korea’s North Gyeongsang province as destinations for longer trips.
The two areas were selected for a national program run by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization.
The routes will centre on the Haeparang Trail along the East Coast, part of a roughly 4,500-kilometre walking network that follows the country’s coasts and the border area near the Demilitarized Zone.
Gyeongju plans to create a roughly four-kilometre route with sound walks, geology talks and coastal yoga and meditation.
Yeongdeok will combine its coastal path with fishing-village culture, local food and activities such as a family overnight “sea school.”
Both areas also plan to connect walks with nearby attractions, accommodation and food businesses.
The goal is to encourage visitors to stay longer and experience local culture, and North Gyeongsang province says it will support the routes’ development.
