LIGHTSUM returns to activity with Japanese debut after two-year break
K-pop group LIGHTSUM has restarted activities after a two-year break, moving between South Korea and Japan for performances.
The group, which debuted in 2021, had not released music since its digital single “POSE!”
in August 2024.
It made its Japanese debut with the album Re:idol and the song “Doshite,” which uses a cute Japanese idol-style concept.
The group says it was unsure about the change in style, but decided the opportunity could bring its performances to more people.
Re:idol reached fourth on Japan’s Oricon album chart, while the “Doshite” music video ranked third on Japan’s daily YouTube music video chart.
The group has also released a Korean version of the song and appeared on a South Korean music program.
LIGHTSUM plans a showcase in Tokyo on December 28 and hopes to reach more fans next year.
LIGHTSUM resumed activities with an official Japanese debut after a two-year hiatus.
The group released its Japanese debut mini-album, Re:idol, last month, led by the song Doshite.
The album reached No. 4 on Japan’s Oricon album chart on October 12, the group’s highest position to date.
LIGHTSUM also released a Korean version of Doshite, titled Eotteokhae, on October 22 and appeared on a Korean music show.
Members said the Japanese relaunch was a turning point and that positive responses helped them gain confidence in its cute concept.

What people are saying
It’s the busiest time since our debut, and we’re constantly going back and forth between Korea and Japan without even having time to unpack our suitcases. Rather than tired, we’re happy.
There were many moments during the two-year hiatus when I wondered whether I should give up, but I’m glad we held on.
I had concerns about the cute concept, but as the response has been good, I’m gradually gaining confidence.
I think this has been a major turning point for LIGHTSUM.
