Indonesia to ease housing rules for low-income families
Indonesia’s Interior Minister Tito Karnavian pledged support for President Prabowo’s Three Million Houses program by easing rules for low-income families.
The government says about 30 million families lack a home or live in inadequate housing.
Tito said the government will define eligible low-income families by their income, rather than simply by whether they are among the bottom 40 percent.
Eligible families will not have to pay certain property tax and building permit fees when building or repairing homes.
The government has also made it easier for some residents without land certificates in Jakarta’s informal settlements to apply for home-repair assistance using a letter from local officials.
The changes aim to help more families get decent housing and encourage private developers to contribute alongside government funding.
