China’s AI inference data surpasses training data for the first time

China’s AI inference data has overtaken training data for the first time, according to a report released by the China Electronics Information Industry Development Research Institute.

Inference is the use of an AI model to respond to requests, while training is the process of developing the model.

Daily token calls exceeded 175 trillion by June 2026, more than 1,000 times the level in early 2024.

The report says this shift signals that AI in China is moving from model development towards widespread use in business and industry.

More than 500 advanced smart factories have been built across China, and domestic computing systems and large AI models are being used in over 1,000 applications across 20 industries.

The report also says AI is helping expand uses such as customised manufacturing and services throughout a product’s life cycle.

The figures point to AI becoming a tool for industrial change, though the sources do not give a specific next step.
