Mexico's audit office flags 9.6 billion pesos in unverified spending
Mexico’s federal audit office flagged 9.6 billion pesos in unverified 2025 spending in its review of public accounts.
The review covers the first year of President Claudia Sheinbaum’s government, and the amount combines findings from two audit reports.
The office said it has filed 40 complaints with an anti-corruption prosecutor over its findings.
The reported cases include public works that were paid for but not completed, missing medical equipment and documents suspected of being false.
Audits of 42 municipalities found more than 5.2 billion pesos they could not account for.
State-level audits also found more than 1.2 billion pesos needing clarification, while states had returned 1.132 billion pesos before the reviews ended.
Those audited must provide evidence through the audit process, and the office urged public agencies to check that contractors meet tax and social security obligations.
Mexico’s Federal Audit Office reported 9.6 billion pesos in federal spending from 2025 that had not been accounted for.
The amount combines 9 billion pesos flagged in a second audit report with 600 million pesos reported in June.
Auditor General Aureliano Hernández said the office had filed 40 complaints with the anti-corruption prosecutor’s office.
The report also found more than 1,200 million pesos in state-level spending pending clarification and more than 5,200 million pesos unaccounted for across 42 municipalities.
