Samsung and SK Hynix shares fall about 5% in early trading

Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix shares fell about 5% in early trading in Seoul on November 3.

Samsung was down 4.91% and SK Hynix 5.37% at 9:08 a.m.

local time.

The drop followed a fall in US technology stocks, including several major chipmakers, and a 3.37% decline in the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index.

Investors were again concerned about whether heavy spending on artificial intelligence will pay off.

Oracle said it planned to raise $20 billion through stock and bond issues to fund AI infrastructure, while Anthropic said it expected to spend about $895.4 billion on future infrastructure purchases and other costs.

The spending plans heightened questions about AI investment returns, while the US midterm election also raised concerns about possible rules for AI data centers.

Foreign investors and institutions were net sellers in the wider South Korean market, while individual investors were net buyers; no later share-market move was given.
