Erzurum opens Turkey’s first Ülker gastronomy high school

Erzurum has opened the Ülker Gastronomy Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School, the first stop in a planned gastronomy schools project.

The school will offer five years of study, including English preparation, alongside classroom lessons and practical training.

Students will learn about Turkish and world cuisines, food safety, hygiene and kitchen skills, with training in cooking, service and restaurant management.

Turkey’s education minister, Yusuf Tekin, said the schools will record and preserve local food traditions, which he described as poorly documented.

The ministry is also developing a system to list places that prepare and serve each province’s food in line with its culture and traditions.

The school is intended to train skilled workers and support the promotion of regional cuisine and tourism; the ministry plans to expand gastronomy schools, but gave no timetable.
