Japan to speed up urban flood and underpass safety measures

At a budget committee session in Japan’s House of Representatives on Oct.

13, Liberal Democratic Party lawmaker Alfiya Eri raised urban disaster planning.

She asked Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi how the approach would change after heavy rain caused flooding in Chiba in August.

Takaichi said she had ordered officials to speed up measures for flooding from rainwater and underpasses.

Underpasses can be vulnerable to flooding, and the prime minister said severe inundation could happen across Japan.

She said urban disaster work would be advanced as part of the country’s national resilience measures.

The government’s next steps are to accelerate this work, though no timetable was given.
