CMS targets New York adult day care centers in fraud crackdown

U.S. health officials are expanding a fraud crackdown to New York City’s Social Adult Day Care program.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, or CMS, says some providers in the program are committing fraud.

The program serves adults with physical or cognitive impairments with social activities, personal care and meals.

CMS administrator Mehmet Oz described the program as rife with fraud and said abuse threatens services that could help seniors.

Officials say they are taking action against providers after gaining authority last week to remove providers from federal health care programs.

The agency has announced a broader set of steps to address fraud in the program, but the details of those steps are not given.
