Brienzwiler’s seven-member council announces immediate resignation

Brienzwiler’s seven-member council announced it would resign immediately after tensions in the Swiss village escalated.

The village is in the Bernese Oberland and has about 530 residents.

Council members said officials, staff and their families had faced personal attacks and heavy strain; the municipal clerk has also resigned.

The dispute followed months of criticism over village finances, administration and other local issues, including building-permit delays and plans for a 30 km/h speed limit.

The council said finances were not the reason for its resignation, noting that the 2025 accounts showed a surplus of nearly 198,000 Swiss francs.

A special administration is expected to take over while the village deals with the situation.

Brienzwiler is due to elect a new council on 9 December, and members of the local group Pro Brienzwiler may stand as candidates.
