China promotes General Zhang Shengmin to the Communist Party’s Politburo

China’s Communist Party promoted General Zhang Shengmin to the Politburo, its top governing body.

Zhang is vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, which oversees the country’s military.

He is now the commission’s only member besides President Xi Jinping, after Xi purged two senior generals.

The move came during a four-day closed-door meeting in which party leaders adopted resolutions to guide the party in the coming years.

Leaders also called for stronger party discipline and anti-corruption efforts, saying the party faces increasingly difficult tasks.

Xi has pursued an anti-corruption campaign since taking power in 2012, and it now also targets officials seen as underperforming.

The meeting’s decisions will shape the party’s direction as Xi is widely expected to seek a fourth five-year term as its leader next year.
