Police union Alliance files complaint against the French state

French police union Alliance is filing a complaint against the state over how officers have been directed during student protests that began in mid-September.

The union says unclear and conflicting orders put officers at risk, and points to a gap between Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez’s public statements and instructions officers receive on the ground.

Alliance wants the authorities to clarify who gives and passes on orders and to identify those responsible for disputed instructions.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said 937 police officers and gendarmes had been injured since the protests began, including 40 on Tuesday; the sources give no details about how serious the injuries were.

The dispute also involves the use of rubber-bullet launchers, after a prefect suspended their use in one area and the minister’s office said no national suspension order had been issued.

Separately, 36 investigations are examining police operations in which young people were injured, some seriously.

The complaint is being filed, but the sources do not say what legal action will follow.
