Malaysia's East Coast Rail Link is planned to open in two stages
Malaysia is preparing the East Coast Rail Link, or ECRL, a railway planned to connect the country's east and west coasts.
The route will run from Kota Bharu to Port Klang, passing through Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Selangor.
Passenger trains are designed to reach 160 kilometres per hour, and an express journey from Gombak to Kota Bharu is expected to take about four hours.
The project is planned to open in two stages: the first section, from Kota Bharu to Gombak, is targeted to begin service in January 2027.
The second section, from Gombak to Port Klang, is scheduled to open in January 2028.
The railway is also designed to carry freight, linking industrial areas, communities and ports and supporting logistics and trade.
The published project schedule gives those opening dates, so a different claim that service will begin in December needs further confirmation.
