Tennessee Election Brings House Upset and Three Constitutional Changes
Tennessee voters chose state and federal leaders and decided on constitutional changes in the Nov.
3 election.
Three constitutional amendments passed, covering a ban on statewide property taxes, crime victims’ rights and bail for people accused of certain serious crimes.
In the 4th Congressional District, Democrat Victoria Broderick appeared to edge Republican incumbent Scott DesJarlais by fewer than 300 votes, according to final unofficial results.
The apparent win would be an upset in a district not considered likely to elect a Democrat, and would thwart Republican lawmakers’ effort to secure every Tennessee House seat.
Charlie Hatcher, a Republican and former state agricultural commissioner, won the 5th District with 51% after defeating Chaz Molder.
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jerri Green conceded as Republican U.S. Sen.
Marsha Blackburn led by about 56,000 votes, with some ballots still being counted.
The results were still unofficial, and the provided results do not say what happens next in the close House race.
