New speed camera installed on Waalwijk’s Altenaweg
A new speed camera is operating on the Altenaweg in Waalwijk, the Netherlands, checking vehicles in both directions around the clock.
The busy road carries about 11,000 vehicles a day, and checks found nearly one in 10 drivers exceeded the 50 km/h limit.
Some drivers were recorded travelling at more than 100 km/h.
Dozens of crashes have happened on or near the road in recent years, including some fatal ones, and cyclists crossing it are considered especially at risk.
The municipality, police and public prosecutors hope the camera will reduce speeding and make the area safer for cyclists, pedestrians and drivers.
Recorded speeding offences are sent for fines, and the authorities will review in about three years whether the camera is still needed.
