Andreas Almgren to make marathon debut at New York City race
Sweden’s Andreas Almgren will make his marathon debut in New York on Sunday at the TCS New York City Marathon.
The 31-year-old won the World Half Marathon title in Copenhagen on September 20, becoming the first non-African man to take that crown in 30 years.
He has also won a world championship 10,000-metre race this year, but has not yet raced the full marathon distance.
African-born men have won the last 54 major marathons, including world and Olympic championships, a streak stretching back to 2018.
No European-born man has won a major marathon since 2004, while Almgren is seeking a win that no European-born man has achieved in New York since 1996.
Almgren is going to New York to win, despite the uncertainty of making his debut over 42.2 kilometres.
The race is scheduled for Sunday, and the story does not say what his result will be.
