Hanshin pitcher Haruto Takahashi wins his first Sawamura Award

Hanshin Tigers pitcher Haruto Takahashi won his first Sawamura Award, which honours a leading starting pitcher in Japanese professional baseball.

The 30-year-old finished the season with 16 wins, the most in both leagues, and five complete games.

In 23 appearances, he also had a 1.87 earned-run average, 150 strikeouts and 159 innings pitched.

The award is judged against seven performance benchmarks, including wins, strikeouts, innings and earned-run average.

Takahashi met four benchmarks, as did Hanshin teammate Murakami and Yakult pitcher Yamano, but his wins, earned-run average and winning percentage stood out to the selectors.

He receives a gold trophy and 3 million yen with the award.
