TISS Convocation Postponed Amid Protest Concerns
The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) had a graduation ceremony planned for August 2, 2024.
Two days before the event, the institute decided to postpone it because of worries about protests and other problems.
Some faculty say a late-night phone call with a judge and the institute’s leaders made the decision.
TISS says it was an internal decision and will pay back students who had to travel.
The ceremony will be rescheduled soon.
TISS postponed its August 2 convocation two days before the event, citing unforeseen circumstances that could not provide a conducive environment.
Faculty sources claim a midnight conference call with Justice Ghuge, VC Tiwari, Registrar Mishra, and a staff member of Chief Justice Surya Kant prompted the decision.
TISS denies the call, stating the postponement followed an internal assessment and was communicated to all stakeholders.
The institute will reimburse affected students and reschedule the convocation at the earliest possible date.
Several public events involving Chief Justice Surya Kant, including a workshop and a lecture, were also postponed.
