Gujarat's Pulse Production Doubles in Six Years
Gujarat in India has become a top producer of pulses, which are types of legumes like chickpeas and lentils.
In just six years, the amount of pulses grown in Gujarat has doubled.
This means farmers are now growing more than 20 lakh metric tonnes of pulses every year.
The state has expanded the area used for growing pulses and has improved how much they can grow on each piece of land.
Chickpeas make up most of the pulses grown in Gujarat.
Officials say this big increase is because of better water supplies, higher prices for the pulses, and new types of seeds that help plants grow better.
This is good news for India because it means the country can rely more on its own food production.
Gujarat's annual pulse production has doubled to 21.52 lakh metric tonnes in six years.
The area under pulse cultivation expanded from 9 lakh hectares to 14.39 lakh hectares.
Productivity increased from 1,173 kg per hectare to 1,495 kg per hectare.
Chickpea production rose from 6.36 lakh metric tonnes to 15.63 lakh metric tonnes.
Improved irrigation, higher support prices, and better seed varieties drove the growth.
