Pakistan Imposes Fuel, Spending and Wedding Austerity Measures

Pakistan’s government has introduced new rules to save fuel and money.

It will not buy most new government vehicles and will give official cars half as much fuel for three months.

Many government workers will not be allowed to travel abroad during this period.

If a trip is necessary, officials must fly economy class.

The government also wants weddings to serve only one dish.

Shops must close by 9 p.m., wedding halls by 10 p.m.

and restaurants by 11 p.m.

Some places, such as hospitals, pharmacies, fuel stations and call centers, are exempt.

The government says the steps are needed because regional conflict and Red Sea disruptions have created concerns about fuel supplies and spending.
