RBI Orders Border Banks to Install Counterfeit‑Detection Machines
The Reserve Bank of India told banks that have branches near other countries to put special machines that can check if a banknote is real.
It also said all people who handle cash at the bank must learn how to spot fake notes by the end of 2026.
If a fake note is found, the bank must keep it and report it, not give it back or throw it away.
Banks will also look at where fake notes are most common and focus their training there.
This helps keep money safe for everyone.
RBI directs border‑district banks to equip branches with note authentication/sorting machines.
The order follows an analysis showing some banks’ counterfeit‑currency detection efforts were inadequate.
All cash‑handling staff must be trained on genuine note security features by October 31, 2026.
Detected fake notes must be impounded, not returned or destroyed, and reported per guidelines.
Banks’ Forged Note Vigilance cells must analyze data to identify hotspots and focus outreach.
