Xi Announces Panda Pair for Atlanta Zoo Amid US-China Tensions
Chinese President Xi Jinping said two giant pandas will soon go to Zoo Atlanta.
The pandas are named Ping Ping and Fu Shuang.
Xi described pandas as friendly messengers between China and the United States.
The zoo has hosted pandas before, but its previous four pandas returned to China in 2024.
Zoo Atlanta has not announced the exact arrival date.
China usually lends pandas to other countries instead of giving them away.
Any cubs born abroad usually belong to China and later return there.
Sending pandas can encourage friendship, but returning or withholding them can reflect political disagreements.
About 1,800 giant pandas live in the wild, and the species is classified as vulnerable.
Xi Jinping announced that Ping Ping and Fu Shuang will arrive at Zoo Atlanta in the coming days.
Zoo Atlanta previously hosted pandas from 1999 until the last four returned to China in November 2024.
The zoo agreed in April with the China Wildlife Conservation Association to host the new pair.
China leases pandas abroad, retaining ownership of the animals and generally their cubs.
The announcement renews panda diplomacy as the United States and China manage ongoing tensions.
