Hyderabad doctor warns about OTC allergy drops for infants
A doctor in Hyderabad is warning parents about the dangers of giving allergy drops to babies.
These drops, which are meant to treat allergies, are sometimes sold without a prescription, even though they should only be given with a doctor's approval.
The drops usually come with a dropper that gives an adult dose, which is too much for a baby.
This can make babies very sleepy and have trouble breathing.
The doctor says that these medicines should not be given to babies under six months and that parents should not give them without a doctor's advice.
Instead, parents can use saline drops for a blocked nose.
The doctor is asking for stricter rules to make sure these medicines are only sold with a prescription and for better packaging to prevent overdosing.
Hyderabad pediatrician Dr. Shivranjani Santosh warns about over-the-counter sale of cetirizine and levocetirizine drops for infants.
These drops are Schedule H drugs, meant to be sold only on prescription, but are often dispensed without one.
Common droppers contain 10 mg per ml, which is an adult dose and can be harmful to infants.
Overdosing can cause excessive drowsiness, shallow breathing, and in extreme cases, can be fatal.
Dr. Santosh recommends strict enforcement of prescription laws, better packaging, and greater awareness among parents and pharmacists.
