Tata Power Clarifies Additional Security Deposit on Bills
Tata Power in Odisha has explained why they are asking some people to pay more money as a security deposit for their electricity.
They said this is a rule that has been around for a long time and is required by law.
If you use less electricity, you might get some money back.
If you use more, you might have to pay extra.
The good news is that the money you pay as a deposit earns interest, and Tata Power makes sure it's safe in the bank.
They also said that if you don't pay the extra money on time, you might have to pay a fine.
Some people were upset about this, but Tata Power says they are just following the rules.
Tata Power Odisha clarified that the Additional Security Deposit (ASD) is a statutory requirement under the Electricity Act, 2003 and OERC regulations.
Consumers' security deposits are adjusted based on their electricity consumption patterns and tariff structure.
Consumers who used less electricity may receive a refund, while those who used more must pay an additional deposit.
Security deposits earn an annual interest of 6.50%, credited to electricity bills, with Rs 217.29 crore credited in 2024–25.
Late payment of ASD incurs a 15% annual surcharge, and deposits are fully refundable upon surrendering the connection.
