PMK’s Neutrality Puts Tamil Nadu Politics at Crossroads
The PMK is an important political party in Tamil Nadu.
It won four seats while working with the AIADMK.
Now, it says it will remain neutral in two by-elections.
This has led to guesses that the PMK may join the TVK-led government.
The VCK says it will not stay in a coalition that includes the PMK or BJP.
However, the VCK has denied that it is preparing to leave the government now.
The Communist parties have criticized some government decisions.
If those parties withdraw support, the TVK may need the PMK to remain strong.
The PMK, which won four Assembly seats with the AIADMK, declared neutrality in the Madurantakam and Dharapuram by-elections.
The announcement fueled speculation that the PMK could join the TVK-led Secular Social Justice Victory Alliance.
VCK leaders rejected reports of an imminent exit but said they would not join a coalition including the PMK or BJP.
The PMK reportedly rebuffed AIADMK leaders’ attempts to meet, suggesting its alliance with the party may be ending.
The TVK’s possible need for PMK support depends partly on whether the CPI, CPM and VCK continue backing the government.
