NDRF Reports No Nepal Flood Impact in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh
A very large flash flood struck Nepal after mud, rocks and water rushed into rivers.
Many people died or went missing, although reports gave different numbers as rescue work continued.
Rivers from Nepal flow into India, so Bihar and Uttar Pradesh could also face flooding.
The NDRF said those states had not suffered an adverse flood impact at the time of its briefing.
Rescue teams were placed in the states in case people needed to be evacuated or helped.
Officials watched the Gandak River and the Valmikinagar barrage very closely.
Three bodies were found in the Gandak in Uttar Pradesh after apparently drifting from Nepal.
Four more teams were waiting in Ghaziabad to help Nepal if its government asked and India approved.
India also sent two plane loads of emergency supplies to Nepal.
The NDRF said Nepal’s flash floods had caused no adverse impact in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh’s border areas so far.
Reports differed on Uttar Pradesh deployments: one account said 11 teams were stationed there, while NDRF officials described nine teams in Bihar and one in Kushinagar.
Authorities are monitoring the Gandak River, Valmikinagar barrage and vulnerable villages for rising water levels and possible flooding.
Three bodies were recovered from the Gandak in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district after apparently being swept downstream from Nepal.
Four NDRF teams remain on standby in Ghaziabad, while India has sent two plane loads of relief supplies to Nepal.
