India Imposes 30% Duty on Yellow Pea Imports to Curb Price Decline
Imagine farmers growing yellow peas, a type of bean.
Recently, a lot of cheaper yellow peas have been coming into India, making the prices go down.
This is bad for the farmers.
The India Pulses and Grains Association (IPGA) asked the government to put a tax, or duty, on these imported peas.
The government has now put a 30% tax on yellow pea imports, starting on November 1st.
The IPGA actually wanted a bigger tax, like 50%, but they think this 30% tax is a good start.
It's meant to help stop prices from falling too much.
The government is being careful so that the tax doesn't make prices go up too quickly, which could make food more expensive for everyone.
Even with the tax, the price of yellow peas is currently around ₹35 per kg.
India has imposed a 30% duty on yellow pea imports, effective November 1.
The duty, consisting of a 10% customs duty and a 20% agriculture infrastructure development cess, aims to curb cheaper imports.
The India Pulses and Grains Association (IPGA) had initially requested a 50% duty.
Yellow pea prices have fallen from $375-400 per tonne last year to around $300-320 per tonne.
Yellow pea imports nearly doubled in FY25, reaching over 21.45 lakh tonnes.
