India's Savings Deposit Growth Slows Post-Covid
In India, people have been saving money in banks for a long time, and the amount saved has been growing.
However, after the Covid-19 pandemic, the growth in savings deposits has slowed down.
This is because people are now putting more of their money into things like stocks and mutual funds, which can give them higher returns.
Even though the growth in savings deposits has slowed, the total amount saved in banks is still very large.
This is because more people are using banks, and digital banking has become very popular.
The government has also helped by making it easier for people to use banks and save money.
So, even though people are putting their money into different types of investments, the banking system in India is still strong and growing.
India's savings deposits with Scheduled Commercial Banks grew 374% from FY2010-11 to FY2024-25.
The average annual growth in savings deposits slowed to 8.6% post-Covid (FY2020-21 to FY2024-25).
Households are diversifying into equities and mutual funds, with the retail investor base expanding to 11 crore by FY25.
Indian banks hold 99.1% of total savings deposits, with foreign banks holding only 0.9%.
Policy initiatives like financial inclusion and demonetization have supported sustained deposit mobilization.
