Vaishno Devi Pilgrimage Sees 27% Drop in 2025
The number of people visiting the Mata Vaishno Devi temple in Jammu and Kashmir dropped a lot in 2025.
Only about 68.85 lakh people visited by the end of December, which is much less than the 94.84 lakh people who visited in 2024.
This happened because of some bad things that happened during the year.
In April, there was a terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people.
Then, in May, there was a big operation against terrorists that made the border area tense.
In August, a landslide caused by heavy rain killed 35 people and closed the temple for three weeks.
Even though the temple authorities worked hard to keep people safe and improve the infrastructure, these events made fewer people visit the temple this year.
The most people visited in April, and the fewest visited in September when there was a lot of rain and flooding.
Pilgrim footfall at Mata Vaishno Devi shrine dropped to 68.85 lakh in 2025, a 27.4% decrease from 94.84 lakh in 2024.
Security incidents, including a terror attack in April and a major counter-terror operation in May, contributed to the decline.
A landslide in August caused by heavy rain killed 35 pilgrims and led to a three-week closure of the shrine.
The highest footfall was recorded in April (9,81,228 pilgrims), while the lowest was in September (1,85,165 pilgrims).
Despite challenges, the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board continued infrastructure upgrades and safety measures.
