Nepal Flood Death Toll Tops 1,000 as Rescue Effort Continues

A very large flood struck Nepal on August 26 after part of a glacier collapsed.

The collapse sent rocks, ice and melted water rushing into valleys.

The water and mud then moved through rivers in Tibet and Nepal.

Homes, roads, bridges and other buildings were swept away.

More than 1,000 people have died, and nearly 4,500 are still missing.

Rescue workers are trying to reach about 100 hydropower workers trapped in tunnels.

India has sent rescue workers, equipment and medical supplies to help.

Rescuers are having difficulty because water is filling the tunnels and rescue shafts.
