Finance Ministry issues guidelines on insurance policyholder grievance redressal
Imagine you paid money to a company and they were not nice to you.
In India, the government made a rule book to help people who are unhappy with their insurance company.
Insurance is a promise from a company to help pay for things like hospital bills.
Sometimes the company says no to paying, or takes too long to reply.
The new guide tells you what steps to take if that happens.
First, you should tell the insurance company about your problem.
Every insurance office must have a special helper called a grievance officer.
The company must give you an answer within fourteen days.
If they do not help you, you can go to a big government office called IRDAI.
You can also call free phone numbers or send an email to ask for help.
The Department of Financial Services (DFS), under the Ministry of Finance, released guidelines on August 14, 2026, for insurance policyholders facing unfair claim rejections, delays or mis-selling.
Policyholders must first raise complaints with the insurer's dedicated Grievance Redressal Officer (GRO), which every insurer office is mandated to designate.
Insurers are required to acknowledge complaints immediately and provide a resolution within 14 days.
If there is no response within 14 days or the policyholder is dissatisfied, they can escalate to the IRDAI's Policyholders' Protection & Grievance Redressal Department.
Complaints can be lodged via the Bima Bharosa Portal, toll-free helplines 155255 or 1800-4254-732, or email at [email protected].
