Cue Sports Championship Aims to Boost Commonwealth Games Inclusion
India is hosting a large cue sports championship in Ahmedabad.
Cue sports include games such as billiards, snooker, pool and heyball.
More than 45 countries are expected to take part.
The event is not officially part of the Commonwealth Games yet.
BSFI President S Balasubramaniam hopes it will show that cue sports belong in the main Games programme.
He believes inclusion could bring more government funding and attention to the sport.
BSFI also wants to help young people learn cue sports through coaching programmes.
The federation is planning a pool league and hopes more coverage will encourage youngsters to participate.
The Commonwealth Cue Sports Championships in Ahmedabad will feature competitors from more than 45 countries across five disciplines.
BSFI President S Balasubramaniam said hosting the event could strengthen India’s case for cue sports to enter the Commonwealth Games.
The Billiards and Snooker Federation of India is also scheduled to host the A-Ball World Championships and IBSF World Snooker Championships this year.
BSFI plans nationwide coaching programmes, greater promotion of pool and heyball, and a televised pool league.
Balasubramaniam said Ahmedabad was chosen because it is set to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
