Visually Impaired Beekeeper Succeeds in Nagaland
There is a man named Tsangmong who lives in a village in Nagaland, India.
When he was a child, he became blind due to an illness.
Despite this, he decided to become a beekeeper about five years ago.
He taught himself how to take care of bees and make honey by listening to the sounds the bees make and using his hands to feel the weight of the bee boxes.
He started with just one colony of bees that settled near his home.
Now, he has four colonies and harvests honey several times a year.
He recently attended a training program to learn more about scientific beekeeping.
The program gave him a special bee box to help him in his work.
Tsangmong's story shows that with determination, anyone can achieve their goals, even if they have disabilities.
Tsangmong, a 37-year-old visually impaired man from Leankonger village in Shamator district, Nagaland, has successfully established and managed four active bee colonies.
He began his beekeeping journey nearly five years ago without formal training, teaching himself through persistence and experimentation.
Tsangmong was spotted during a scientific beekeeping training program conducted by the National Bee Board-National Beekeeping and Honey Mission (NBB-NBHM) and implemented by the School of Agricultural Sciences, Nagaland University, Medziphema campus.
He constructs semi-traditional handmade bee boxes using locally available materials and determines the right harvesting time by lifting the boxes and judging their weight.
During the training program, Shamator SDO (Civil) Bodi Kapfo handed over a scientific bee box to Tsangmong, demonstrating the inclusive potential of apiculture and empowering individuals across abilities and circumstances.
