Six Jehovah’s Witnesses Sentenced in Russia After Informant Evidence

Russia banned Jehovah’s Witnesses as an extremist organization in 2017.

Six members of the group were recently convicted of extremist activity.

Two of them were given five years in a penal colony.

Four women were given compulsory labor sentences of up to four years.

The group says a woman pretended to need religious comfort after losing someone.

It says she secretly recorded conversations and gave them to Russia’s security service.

One convicted woman said she only wanted to help and had done nothing harmful.

A European court and a United Nations committee have criticized or rejected the ban.
