Shillong MP Calls for Halt to Assam-Meghalaya Border Demarcation
Imagine two states, Assam and Meghalaya, are trying to figure out where their border is.
They signed an agreement and are putting up markers called border pillars.
But, a local leader, MP Ricky Syngkon, is worried.
He says the people who live near the border haven't been asked what they think.
He believes they should have a say in where the border goes.
He wants the government to pause putting up the markers until everyone can talk about it.
He thinks this will help make sure everyone is happy and avoid any problems later on.
Shillong MP Ricky Syngkon urges PM Modi to halt border pillar erection between Assam and Meghalaya.
The MP cites a lack of consultation with local communities and traditional institutions.
Border pillars are being erected in five areas: Tarabari, Gizang, Hahim, Boklapara, Khanapara-Pilangkata, and Ratacherra.
Syngkon highlights the exclusion of local bodies like Hima Nongspung from decision-making.
He suggests dialogue between regional committees and district authorities to resolve ambiguities.
