Schools Create Safe Zones for Students
Schools in Delhi and Hanoi have created safe zones for students.
In Delhi, the government worked with IIT-Delhi and an NGO to build walking lanes, cycle tracks, and play areas in front of schools.
Students and parents helped design and paint these spaces.
This makes it safer for kids to walk or cycle to school.
In Hanoi, a similar project was started to make it easier and safer for children to walk to school without their parents.
These changes have made the areas around the schools happier and safer for everyone.
Delhi government initiated 11 safe zones for schoolchildren in 2022, including walking lanes, cycle tracks, and play areas.
Students and parents in Delhi participated in the design and maintenance of the safe zones, making the area more inclusive.
In Hanoi, Van Phuc primary school created a continuous walking lane by reclaiming encroached footpaths, encouraging children to walk to school.
Three other schools in Hanoi have also implemented safe zones since 2023, improving pedestrian safety and reducing traffic speed.
The WHO emphasizes the importance of slowing traffic to reduce accidents, highlighting the need for infrastructure that naturally slows down vehicles.
