Kashmir Leaders Debate Pandit Return and Statehood
Leaders in Kashmir are talking about two big issues.
First, they want Kashmiri Pandits, who have been living outside Kashmir for 36 years, to come back.
Mehbooba Mufti suggested giving them special seats in the local government so they can be part of the elections.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq also said it's important for them to return and live with others as equals.
Second, there's a debate about dividing Jammu and Kashmir into separate states.
Some leaders like Farooq Abdullah think this is a bad idea and reminds them of an old plan called the Dixon Plan.
Others, like Sajad Lone, think it might be a good idea to separate the regions.
Everyone has different opinions, but they all agree that peace and understanding are important.
Mehbooba Mufti proposed reserving two Assembly seats for Kashmiri Pandits to facilitate their return and participation in elections.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq emphasized the importance of the dignified return of Kashmiri Pandits and rebuilding trust through dialogue.
The Dixon Plan, a 76-year-old proposal for dividing Jammu and Kashmir, has resurfaced in political debates.
Farooq Abdullah and other leaders oppose the Dixon Plan, while Sajad Lone advocates for a reassessment of the Kashmir-Jammu relationship.
Junaid Azim Mattu called for support for statehood for Greater Kashmir, the Kashmiri-speaking area.
