UK Prevent Scheme Sees Sharp Rise in Referrals, New Threats Emerge
A government program in the UK called Prevent helps stop people from becoming terrorists.
Recently, more people than ever were reported to Prevent.
Last year, the number of people reported went up by 27%.
Some of these reports were about people who didn't have a clear extremist idea, but many were still worried about things like extreme right-wing ideas, Islamist extremism, or a strong interest in violence.
This shows that it's getting harder to figure out who might become dangerous, especially when some people seem interested in violence just for its own sake, or are influenced by things they see online.
Officials are trying to make sure Prevent can handle all kinds of threats, even those without a specific belief system.
The UK's counter-radicalisation scheme Prevent saw an increase of 27% in referrals last year.
A total of 8,778 referrals were recorded in the year leading up to March.
Approximately 34% of referrals did not specify an ideology.
Of the specified ideologies, 21% were linked to extreme right-wing extremism and 10% to Islamist extremism.
There's a growing concern about individuals fascinated by extreme violence or mass casualty attacks, prompting calls for Prevent to adapt its approach.
