Assam to Grant Land Rights to Tea Workers
In Assam, India, the government is giving land rights to tea garden workers.
They will get land from the tea gardens where they live.
The government has started the process and has warned tea garden owners that if they don't cooperate, they will lose the benefits they get from the government.
This is a big change because the workers have been living in these gardens for a long time without owning any land.
The government says this is important and will help the workers.
They also said that the rest of India should learn more about the Northeast to prevent bad things from happening to people from there.
Assam government is providing land rights to tea garden workers under The Assam Fixation of Ceiling of Land Holdings (Amendment) Act, 2025.
The government has started the process of land acquisition and distribution, with the governor's assent given.
Tea garden owners who do not cooperate will lose annual incentives of around ₹150 crore.
The move aims to benefit 3.33 lakh tea garden worker families across 825 estates.
The government's tough stand follows concerns raised by the Consultative Committee of Planters’ Associations (CCPA) over operational sustainability and financial implications.
