UN Report Says 1.5°C Breach Is Now Unavoidable

A new United Nations report says the world will probably pass the 1.5°C warming limit.

This limit is not a switch that suddenly causes a climate disaster, but staying below it would reduce many dangers.

In the best possible scenarios, temperatures may rise to at least 1.8°C before coming down.

Other scenarios could reach more than 2°C.

More warming can bring stronger heatwaves, floods, droughts, wildfires and damage to nature.

It can also threaten ice sheets, coral reefs, the Amazon rainforest and ocean currents.

Countries must quickly reduce greenhouse-gas emissions and protect people from impacts that are already happening.

Eventually, temperatures could only be lowered through net-negative emissions, meaning removing more carbon dioxide than is released.
