N Chandrasekaran's Tata Sons Exit Explained: The Boardroom Standoff Story

Tata Sons is a very large group of companies, and it chooses one leader, called the chairman, to be in charge.

N Chandrasekaran has been that leader, and he wanted to stay for five more years.

Two big trusts that own large parts of the company agreed with him.

But one member of the board said no, and the rule was that everyone had to agree.

Because of that, the decision got stuck.

Reports say the person who disagreed was Noel Tata, the head of the Tata Trusts.

He wanted clear plans for the company's future, its newer businesses with losses, and a way for the Shapoorji Pallonji Group to exit its stake.

Chandrasekaran waited six months for an answer, but no final decision came.

So he told the board he would not ask for another term.

His time as chairman ends in February 2027, and now the board has to pick a new leader, a bit like choosing a new team captain.
