Kunal Kamra Seeks Supreme Court Intervention in Privilege Case

Kunal Kamra is a comedian who has asked India’s Supreme Court to let him join an important legal case.

The case asks how much power legislative assemblies have to punish people for comments about lawmakers.

It also asks how that power should fit with the right to free speech.

Kamra says this question matters to him because Maharashtra lawmakers started privilege proceedings over jokes in his show “Naya Bharat.”

The jokes discussed political events in Maharashtra and referred to Eknath Shinde.

Kamra says using privilege rules to stop citizens from speaking can hurt democracy.

A separate criminal case over the performance is also pending, and the Bombay High Court has directed that he not be arrested while his petition remains pending.

The Supreme Court case began after Tamil Nadu lawmakers ordered the arrest of journalists in 2003.

Earlier court decisions disagreed about whether fundamental rights or legislative privileges should take priority.
