BCI writes to CJI over Kerala HC judge's remarks
The Bar Council of India (BCI) wrote a letter to the Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant, because a judge in the Kerala High Court made some comments about the Kerala Bar Council elections.
The BCI said these comments were unfair and could hurt the reputation of the Bar Council.
They explained that the election rules, including a fee of Rs 1.25 lakh, were already approved by the Supreme Court.
The BCI also mentioned that they spend a lot of money on elections, which comes from the legal community, not the government.
They asked the Chief Justice to make sure such issues are handled properly in the future.
The Bar Council of India (BCI) wrote to the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant expressing concern over remarks made by a Kerala High Court judge regarding the state Bar Council election.
The BCI described the judge's observations as baseless and reckless, stating they cast aspersions on the BCI and disturbed the balance between the Bar and the Bench.
The nomination fee of Rs 1.25 lakh for the Kerala Bar Council elections was approved by the Supreme Court and forms part of the election framework.
The BCI highlighted that the expenses for election supervision, amounting to over Rs 20 crore, are borne entirely by the legal fraternity without any government assistance.
The BCI requested the CJI to issue appropriate advisories to ensure election-related matters are confined to the mechanism constituted by the Supreme Court.
