Maharashtra Marathi Language Mandate Draws Constitutional and Economic Criticism

Maharashtra Marathi Language Mandate Draws Constitutional and Economic Criticism

Maharashtra wants taxi, auto-rickshaw and app-based cab drivers to know basic Marathi.

The government says this will help drivers understand instructions and speak with passengers.

Drivers who do not know enough Marathi will first receive a notice.

They will have one month to learn the language.

Their licences or work badges could later be suspended.

Repeat violations could permanently cancel their licences.

Critics say language should not be required to get a transport job.

They also worry the rule may hurt migrant workers and make Mumbai’s transport system less flexible.
