Paytm management gets SEBI notice over timing of 2023 loan disclosure

Paytm management gets SEBI notice over timing of 2023 loan disclosure

There is a big company in India called Paytm that helps people pay for things with their phones.

In December 2023, Paytm said it would stop giving out as many small personal loans — loans under about 50,000 rupees, which is roughly $525.

It did this after India's central bank, the Reserve Bank of India, asked lenders to be more careful with small loans.

After Paytm's announcement, the price of its shares fell a lot, which worried people who invest in the company.

Now SEBI, the group that watches over India's stock markets, is asking why Paytm made its announcement when it did.

SEBI sent a formal letter called a show cause notice to Paytm's top leaders, asking them to explain their actions.

The letter is dated August 11, 2026, and the leaders received it on Tuesday.

They have two weeks to answer the letter.

Paytm says it does not expect to lose any money because of this letter.

But if SEBI decides Paytm did something wrong, the leaders could be fined or face restrictions.
